I’ve been looking at the blockchain developer market in 2026, especially hiring, layoffs, and where companies are investing.
The main takeaway is clear: blockchain is still active, but the market is becoming smaller, more selective, and increasingly connected to AI.
Major layoffs
Several well-known crypto and fintech companies have reduced headcount in 2026:
-
Block — nearly 50%, more than 4,000 jobs
-
Gemini — about 25%
-
Exodus — about 25%
-
Luno — about 20%
-
Uphold — about 17%
-
Coinbase — about 14%
-
Crypto.com — about 12%
AI is not the only reason. Market conditions, previous over-hiring, cost reduction, and restructuring also matter. But the direction is clear: companies increasingly expect smaller engineering teams to produce more with AI.
What this means for us
We should not stop learning blockchain. There are still strong opportunities in stablecoins and payments, smart contracts, security, trading systems, wallet infrastructure, tokenization, and on-chain data.
But we should not position ourselves as blockchain-only developers. Our main technical focus should increasingly be AI development, especially:
-
LLM applications
-
AI agents
-
RAG systems
-
AI automation
-
Multimodal systems
-
AI + backend architecture
-
AI-assisted software development
Blockchain can then become part of a larger system: AI + payments, AI + wallets, AI + smart contracts, AI + financial automation, and AI + on-chain data.
The main point
The market is not necessarily looking for more developers. It is looking for developers who can accomplish more.
So our direction should be: keep our blockchain knowledge, strengthen our engineering fundamentals, and put significantly more focus on AI development.
The strongest engineers going forward will be those who can combine AI, backend systems, data, automation, security, and blockchain when it actually provides value.
